In the 1990s it was becoming increasingly difficult for large international firms to provide personal and cost effective services to smaller businesses and individual investors.  Graeme McLean was the first to take action to remedy this; he left Ernst & Young in 1990 to acquire a half share in Foster &Co from Geoff Foster who was practising as a sole practioner in Chatswood. Geoff had started Foster & Co in 1978 after running Coopers & Lybrand's office in Fiji.

In 1992, George Raffan left Ernst & Young, where he knew Graeme, and started Raffan & Company in order to deliver to smaller clients more personal and relevant services than he was able to do as a partner in a large firm.  He shared office space and services with Foster & Co in Chatswood.

When Geoff Foster retired in 1993, Graeme was joined by Doug Wood who left Coopers & Lybrand (now PriceWaterhouseCoopers) to provide more cost effective audits for smaller businesses and acquired Geoff's half share in Foster & Co.

On 1 July 1995, Foster & Co and Raffan & Company merged in order to be able to provide a wider range of services to their clients, attract better staff and acquire better technology.  The firm set up in 8 West Street,  North Sydney.

Effective 1 May 2017, the firm divested the tax/ compliance division.
